Our conference was held at the recently renovated, historic Wentworth Hotel in New Hampshire. The setting was beautiful, the food superb, and the company invigorating. Thomas A. Power, Associate Professor of Theatre at the University of Southern Maine and his associate, Bill Steele, facilitated “Image Matters,” a day-long training program designed to help us hone our public speaking and presentation skills as well as better understand how and why “image” counts.
Attendees participated in the hands-on, interactive workshop. Small working groups created presentations for five diverse, fictional organizations: Green Oil; Even Steven; Passamadumkeag Homes; Helping Hands; and the Senior Activity Center. Tom and Bill evaluated each of the presentations to help us assess our skills and teach us effective strategies to project ourselves and our programs successfully to a variety of constituents, including potential funders, boards of directors, community advocacy groups, and state agences.
The following is a brief outline of the material covered to help us hone our presentation skills:
I - Introduction & Conclusion
II - Originality of approach
III - Organization
IV - Transitions
V – Examples
VI - Proof of Research
VII - Language
VIII -What does the audience, expect from a presenter?
IX -Podium Presence
X - Rehearse
XI - Do’s and Don’ts
It was an enlightening experience, and - as always - a great opportunity for us to catch up with our grantees’ exciting initiatives and for our grantees to network with one another.
